WWII Memorial in Boston, MA

The World War II Memorial was built so that others could see the sacrifice of the thousands of people who lost their lives during this war. This was built in 1949. It is placed in a very public place in Boston in Fenway. Between Agassiz Road and Fenway Rose Garden. the image is "A tall shaft, with an eternal light at its top, dominates the monument. Standing in front of the shaft is a monumental bronze winged female figure representing Victory. She holds in her outstretched hands a sheathed sword, symbolizing the end of war, and an olive branch, symbolizing peace. The tall granite ellipse behind the shaft carries bronze plaques bearing the names of the war dead. The Victory figure is by the sculptor John Paramino." The image and quote can be found here: http://www.publicartboston.com/content/world-war-ii-memorial

WWII Memorial in Lynnfield

IMG_0142.jpg There is a World War 2 memorial in the center of Lynnfield that lists hundred of names of brave men who fought for our freedom. Here is the link for the image: http://www.town.lynnfield.ma.us/pages/lynnfieldma_veteran/wwiim

The Town of Lynnfield

Lynnfield was founded in 1963. "The Lynnfield Historical Commission is a 5 member board appointed by the selectmen to preserve, promote, and develop the historical assets of Lynnfield. A local historic Historical Commission is the official agent for community wide historic preservation, planning, and the designation of local historic districts, properties and sites. In particular, this law identifies five responsibilities for historical commissions including: Conducting research on places of historic or architectural value; Cooperating with the State Archeologist in conducting surveys and reporting on sites; Coordinating with other preservation organizations Keeping accurate records of its actions and filing an annual report Maintaining a membership duly appointed by the Board of Selectmen The board may also accept gifts, enter into contracts, and make recommendations to the selectmen."- Lynnfield's website: http://www.town.lynnfield.ma.us For this blog assignment, I looked into the history of my own town a bit and found out that Lynnfield cares about its environment and preserving land for its community. I posted a picture of the town house so other members of the class can get a good feel of what Lynnfield is about.

Woman Smoking

The photo above shows a young woman smoking. In the 1900’s woman smoking was a new sight to see. Most women that smoked in this era were considered rebellious and sexy. It was illegal for women to smoke in this day and age so it was a risky thing to participate in. In this photo the woman is portrayed as desirable and intriguing.

Pearl Harbor

This is an image of the result of when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

http://mountainenterprise.com/fds/images/story/fs_2023.jpg

This image shows the fear that the attack of Pearl Harbor caused. It was such a surprise attack that killed many innocent people. This has been a day that no one can ever forget, it has touched too many lives. This image is so vivid and allows us to see what was going on, on that horrific day without even being there.

Women’s Sufferage

This picture describes how men were against Women’s Sufferage. This picture shows several men standing at a “Headquarters Oppossed to Women’s Surrage”. Woman’s Sufferage is what the women fought for in order to have the right to vote and run for office. Men were not fond of the fact that women seeked impowerment and freedom to do what the want. Most men believed that voting and elections were for men only. Throughout this process women had to overcome the acts of men who were not comfortable with sharing their rights with women.

Peabody Historical Farm Museum

This is the Peabody Historical Fire Museum.  Built in 1875, the building was home to the Peabody Engine Company No. 3 and exhibits rare firefighting artifacts from both Peabody and from Northshore.  It was originally built on Endicott Street in Peabody, but was relocated to Brooksby Farm in another part of Peabody.  Here, it is open to guests, especially from fire-related organizations, free of charge.

Hospital Point Lighthouse

The Beverly Hospital Point Lighthouse was a lighthouse that my girlfriend showed me a few weeks ago.  It was built in 1872 and got its name for a smallpox hospital that was built on site.  It was also more rexently used to guide vessels toward Salem Harbor.

JFK's Grave

This was a picture I took back a few years ago when I was at the Arlington Cemetery.  This is John F. Kenedy's grave.  The fire that you see lit is the Eternal Flame which was thought out by his widowed First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy.  She was inspired by the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Paris, which they both visited in 1961.

The Northshore Mall

The Northshore mall opened in Peabody in 1958 is one of our region's largest malls.  It attracts people from all over the region and is booming since it is Peabody's largest taxpayer.  It was originally planned to be put in Beverly, and was also the first mall to have a chapel built in it (the
St. Therese Society of Mt. Carmel Chapel).

9/11 Memorial: Ground Zero

This was a picture of my sister at the 9/11 memorial, or Ground Zero, in New York City a few years back.  The part of the 9/11 memorial in this picture consists of one of the two sites where the towers once stood.  It is a giant waterfall and reflecting pool set within the footprints of the original towers.  On the boarder of it are all of the 3,000 or so names of the victims of both attacks in 1993 and 2001.  At night, a light shines through the names so that people can still read them in the dark.

Alcatraz

This is a photo of Alcatraz when I was in San Francisco a few years back.  Alcatraz was a prison built in 1868 and notorious for holding the worst criminals of all time such as Machine Gun Kelley and Al Capone.  It was also known to be near impossible to escape because it was it's own island and the nearest shore was about 1.5 miles away.  However the water was freezing, and that's a long swim!  Now its a touring sight and is actually believed to be haunted.

The Giant Dawn Redwood at our house

Here is a giant dawn redwood that we have on the property we care-take at in Hamilton, Ma. The scientific name is called Metasequioa (dawn redwood) and this tree is a fast-growing, deciduous tree and these are decedents of giant redwoods. They are able to grow up to 200 feet in height. The dawn redwood is the smallest in the redwood family and is native to the Sichuan-Hubei region of China. The one on our property is huge and was planted by our neighbors grandmother who is the second daughter of General Patton: Ruth Ellen Totten. The property we live on is on 13 acres and has chickens, donkeys, horses, and dogs. We used to have Scottish Highland cattle which had the huge horns but we recently lost them unfortunately. The owners house was built in the 1800s and was owned by a general, not sure of his name, who was friends with General Patton in late 1800s. The house was built with brick on each end of the house and that is where the name 'Brick Ends' comes from. The house has been restored by my owners now in the 90s but still maintains the historic beams and molding that was originally there in the 1800s. The apartment we live in used to be a huge hay barn that was restored in the 90s also to a 2 bedroom apartment. The horse stalls are still original and have been re-stained to restore how they looked in the old days. Also on the property is a bomb shelter and a tunnel from the main house to the horse stalls. Probably the general put the tunnel in to walk to his horses in the morning without having to go outside. Here are some pictures of the property. Another crazy thing I just discovered on the property is a plaque on a rock that is in a rock wall on the side of the driveway. The plaque reads: "In 1960 settled here: Colonel James Willoughby Totten. Soldier-Scholar-Statesman and Goodwife Ruth Ellen Totten, a notorious witch." Here are the pictures of the plaque and the estate.

Village Pancake House

Here is the Village Pancake House. In circa 1600, this central village house was originally built as an Early American Saltbox. Around 1850 it was remodeled into the Early American Colonial style you see today. Unlike so many historic buildings, this house has stood on its original location in Rowley for nearly 350 years. The village pancake house is open year round and it is  great start to your day. Their breakfast menu is varied for all tastes and famous for its generous portions. I recommend the pancakes, which are delicious and their are over 20 types to choose from. They also serve lunch in their sunny dinning rooms or outside on the deck under the shade of their magnificent 200 year old Copper Beech tree. This place is typically very busy on morning but the wait is fairly short with all the space they have inside. Here is some pictures of our family coming to breakfast during the late spring season hence the snow still on the ground.

THE THUMB TACK!

As you can see there is history in every corner you turn. Sometimes your not even looking for it and it just finds you (or the heel of your foot)

Anyways, one of the very useful inventions that we all love (and hate) is the thumb tack invented by Edwin Moore. I'm sure he wasn't thinking of the pain we would feel after stepping on one of these bad boys. None the less, In 1900 he patented his design for the thumb tack describing it as a pin with a handle. Later, in 1904, Johann Kirsten patented the flat head version of a thumb tack.

It is remarkable how something so small and seemingly insignificant has found its way to the top. I bet even President Obama has some of these laying around somewhere. We can find them in our homes, offices, desks, bulletin boards, and sometimes kitchen floors -_-

It sometimes takes a little pain to trigger our appreciation for things. I'm just happy for who ever invented the thumb tack case.

Keep your eyes open for its A-ttack!

Patton Park Hamilton, MA

Patton Park is located next to the Hamilton-Wenham Community House. The park is down the street from out house and is only a five minute drive. Recently, the town built a brand new playground that is awesome for kids and even parents. Patton Park is known for its full-sized World War II tank. The park is made up of tennis courts, a basketball court, a baseball field, playground, bandstand, a pool and a pond that doubles as a skating rink in the winter. Pool access costs $3 per person for non-members, $10 max for families. Swim lessons and swim team enrollment are available at the pool. A grill and picnic tables are also available. Enjoy free concerts on Sunday evenings from 5pm - 7pm. The concerts are posted online of which bands are playing and are worth checking out on a nice summer night. Patton Park was dedicated on May 26, 1997. The plaque is on a rock centered by the pond in the park and the entrance to the pool has beautiful columns that the town covers up for the winter as seen in the pics above. The dedication plaque reads: "With grateful thanks from the people of Hamilton to the trustees of the Myopia schooling field trust and Myopia Hunt Club for their generous gift of this park and other land usage rights December, 1941 and July, 1996. The park is worth checking out, I highly recommend it!

90's

Being born in the 1990's i remember President Clinton was in office, growing up what I noticed change was technology the most and fashion. I remember beepers turned into cell phones, the computers were huge from desktops to laptops, and cd players to ipods. At my house we had a house phone but by the end of the 1990's that changed and we all had cell phones, by this day i find it so weird when i see a house phone to think thats what i grew up seeing, as well as the television by now they only sell flatscreens. I also remeber what i was doing on September 11,2001 i was in the Clark School in 5th grade i was 11 years old and i was taking a test when one by one my classmates where called to the office because their parents had come to get them. The teacher had not told us yet what had happend, she eneded up telling us what happened by the end of the day. When i went home turning on the tv and seeind what happped scared me. I was scared it wasnt over and they were going to attack Boston and everywhere else. Looking back to now alot has changed we went through a terrosrist attack, fashion and technology changed. I think the 1990s was a good era and if all these things changed so fast im anxious to know what else will advance. The last picure taken in January 1990 my mother is 9 months pregnant in the pink sweater, a week later i was born. The first picture is of me growing up in the 1990s. And middle picture is of the Twin Towers before the attacks.

MLB players and WWII

More than 500 major league players stopped playing baseball and traded in their jerseys for service uniforms during WWII. There were many players absent from the field between 1942 and 1945. Players who joined the service, but were baseball stars like DiMaggio and Musial were kept from the front line service. Big time stars would play "service ball" to entertain troops before they would head off into service. If you were however a minor league player or not well known you would head into combat. Goes to show you that everyone tried to pitch in (Pun intended) during WWII.

Bobby Orr Statue in front of Boston Garden

The greatest human in the history of the world, Bobby Orr, is immortalized in front of what is now the TD Garden. It shows him in flight, after his historic Stanley Cup winning overtime goal. The site of the gorgeous statue, is actually the very site of where he scored the godly goal, because the old Garden was where the statue now lies. Go Bruuuuuuiiiiiins!

Mowalk Trail Massachusetts

The Mohawk Trail began as a Native American trade route, which connected Atlantic Tribes to Upstate New York. Today the route is called Massachusetts Route 3, and it follows much of the original Indian trail. It is considered one of the most beautiful Massachusetts driving routes.

World War II Memorial, Wakefield MA

In my hometown of Wakefield, Massachusetts; they rebuilt the World War II memorial a couple summers ago. I remember the old one was slowly deteriorating and was in need of replacement. The old veterans would get together and paint it every other summer, so it was definitely time to build a new one! It looks great and they also added a walkway that current veterans are honored in, by putting a brick with your name on it. I have one and its a great honor to have something permanently remembering my service. : )

Big bank during WWII

Many big banks supported Nazis during WWII and refused to release hundreds of frozen Jewish bank accounts in Paris. In 1998 Barclays Bank paid 3.6 million dollars to Jews whose assets were seized fro Paris banks during WWII. Chase bank In Manhattan seized over 100 accounts held by Jews in the Paris branch during WWII. Unclassified reports about Chase activities indicate that Chase bank worked in closely with the German authorities in freezing Jewish assets. A French Government commission investigated the seizure of Jewish accounts and found that FIVE American banks had helped Nazis during World War II. Chase Manhattan, J.P. Morgan, Guaranty Trust Co, Bank of the City of New York and American Express. Goes to show you that big banks can't be trusted and to bail out banks versus the citizens of this country was ridiculous.
