Observational Balloons- World War I: My great grandfather's story

World War I begun in the year of 1914 and the United States entered into the war in 1917 when one of the German submarines blow up an American-Britist ship called the Lusitania. During the World War, veterans use observational balloons that were employed as aerial platforms for intelligence gathering and artillery spotting. My great-grandfather Gerard C. Besse Sr. was a war veteran during World War I. When he was on a observation balloon, a plane shot it down. Gerard, my great-grandfather jumped off the balloon with a parachute. While going down on the parachute, he shot the plane that shot down his balloon.

    1. This is a cool story Andrew. My great grandpa was also in WW1 but he didn't fly in a balloon. He was in the Canadian Army because he didn't weigh enough to be in the U.S. Army. I used to have a picture of him in his uniform but it was on my old cellphone and I don't have it anymore.

  2. This is very neat. Learning about the World Wars, this definitely makes it more meaningful (to me) to learn about peoples ancestors that were in the Wars.
