The Greasy Pole Gloucester Mass

Before we get a little history behind the greasy people we must go back further and acquire the history of Gloucester and all of the Italian (Sicilian) Immigrant that brought not only our loud personality but also our complete culture. The Greasy Pole competition originated in Sicily in the 19th century and was brought to Gloucester by the Italian immigrant population of fishermen in the early 20th century. Prior to more recent year their was more tradition involve and only people of Italian decent could participate but now it has been Americanized and anyone can walk. But to walk on Sundays you must win Friday then Saturday prior to advancing to the day of champions unless you are granted the rights to a legends position and walking in that persons name. The award for getting the flag at the end of the pole is bragging rights and free drinks for the whole Saint Peters Fiesta.

  1. Fiesta is so much fun. Last year, I went out on a boat and watched people walk the Greasy Pole. It's interesting how far back the history goes!
